Onyx Hawks
Frontier Conference · Horizon Division · Opportunistic ball-hawk defense
Profile
“Read the eyes. Take the ball.”
The Onyx Hawks are defined by their defense, and their defense is defined by the football. Built on the Tampa 2 of Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin and on Lovie Smith's Chicago defenses, the Hawks play zone coverage with defenders who read the quarterback's eyes and break on the throw.
The Hawks do not blitz much. They prefer to keep everything in front of them, tackle the catch, and wait for the mistake: the forced throw over the middle, the ball carried loosely in traffic. Interceptions and forced fumbles are the measure of a good week.
Their offense is conservative by design: protect the ball, use the short field the defense creates, and do not hand the opponent the kind of gift the Hawks are hunting for. Low-scoring games suit them perfectly.
Identity: instinct, reading the QB, takeaways.
