Tidal Herons
Nexus Conference · Grid Division · Wide zone and bootleg
Profile
“Stretch, cut, boot.”
The Tidal Herons run the wide zone system that Mike Shanahan made famous in Denver. Offensive linemen step in unison toward the sideline, the running back reads the first defender to commit and cuts behind the flow, and the whole offense moves with the rhythm of a wave.
Everything comes off that motion. The bootleg looks exactly like the wide zone at the snap, until the quarterback keeps the ball and rolls the other way with receivers crossing in front of him. Jet motion adds a threat to the perimeter and keeps linebackers honest.
The Herons' mobile quarterback is essential to the scheme, and their balanced ratings make them a steady team. Defenses that stay disciplined on the backside are the ones that slow them down.
Identity: outside zone, movement play-action, rhythm.
Strengths
- Outside zone running
