Bastion Panthers
Nexus Conference · Circuit Division · Lockdown coverage defense
Profile
“Nothing open. Nowhere to throw.”
The Bastion Panthers build everything around their secondary. Their defense is inspired by the press-man coverage of Rex Ryan's New York Jets and their shutdown corner Darrelle Revis: cornerbacks who jam receivers at the line and follow them all over the field, in Cover 1 and Cover 6 shells.
Unlike the Glitch Hornets, the Panthers blitz rarely. They trust their four-man rush and bet that the quarterback's first read will not be open. Sacks often come late in the down, when the ball has nowhere to go. Their special teams are also among the strongest in the league.
On offense the Panthers play a measured passing game led by a pocket distributor. They rarely need many points: a Panthers game is usually a test of how long an opposing offense can stay patient.
Identity: secondary, discipline, deny the first option.
Strengths
- Elite man coverage
- Coverage sacks
- Strong special teams
Weaknesses
- Offense lacks explosiveness
- Mobile quarterbacks can escape man coverage
